Hughie Fury Will Face ‘High Caliber’ Opponent Next, Says Trainer

Boxing Scene

Peter Fury, the father and trainer of 27-year-old heavyweight contender Hughie Fury, makes it clear that his son is going to face a “high-caliber” heavyweight, in order to catapult him in the direction of a world title shot.

Last month, the awkward boxer picked up a stoppage victory over durable veteran Christian Hammer.

Fury has now won three fights in a row since losing a twelve round unanimous decision to Alexander Povetkin in 2019.

Peter Fury would not reveal the name, but indicates that there is a shortlist of opponents.

“We’re just sorting out opponents right now, and we’re busy with it,” Peter Fury told Sky Sports.

“[A world ranked opponent is] exactly what we’re looking at. We’ll definitely get somebody of high caliber.”

Highly ranked contender Michael Hunter would be open to the opportunity of facing Fury in a high-stakes contest.

“I’m at No 2 right now. I know [Daniel] Dubois is in front of me. If I had to fight Hughie Fury to make something happen, to stir up some stuff, I would easily do so.

“I would definitely step in there with no hesitation if it put me in the right position.”

Promoter Ben Shalom of BOXXER has mentioned the idea of matching Fury against dangerous contender Derek Chisora, who lost two fights to cousin and current WBC world champion, Tyson Fury.

But first, Chisora must overcome former WBO world champion Joseph Parker in their December rematch.

“He’s got to get past Parker first hasn’t he. Maybe it will [happen], maybe it won’t,” said Peter Fury.
