Jack Catterall picks a winner in the December fight between Devin Haney and Regis Prograis

Latest

JACK CATTERALL may be determined to settle a score with Josh Taylor but his dream of becoming a world champion also remains a priority.

Business at 140lbs will pick up on December 9 when Regis Prograis defends his WBC super-lightweight title against Devin Haney in San Francisco. As for the rest of the 10-stone division, WBO champion Teofimo Lopez is yet to make his next move, while IBF titlist Subriel Matias could face mandatory challenger Shohjahon Ergashev on the David Benavidez-Demetrius Andrade undercard on November 25. And if Catterall’s former opponent Ohara Davies is to land a shot at WBA holder Rolando Romero, he will have to go through Venezuelan warhorse Ismael Barroso first.

Having comfortably beaten Jorge Linares last night, Catterall mapped out his future plans post-fight to the media. With a rematch against Josh Taylor a priority, Catterall was also asked for his opinion on Prograis vs Haney.

“Interesting fight,” Catterall said. “I’m still leaning towards Regis, he’s the more solid 140 fighter. [He] carries a lot of power. Haney looks big for the weight, so it’ll be interesting to see how he adjusts moving up.”

Catterall went on to then pay tribute to Linares, who announced his retirement after his fourth successive defeat. The expected loss was his first to a British fighter having previously beaten Kevin Mitchell, Anthony Crolla (twice) and Luke Campbell.

“I wish him all the best in retirement,” Catterall said. “I’ve been a fan the last 10-15 years. When the fight was announced, like I said to (manager) Sam [Jones] and (trainer) Jamie [Moore], there’s only respect there for what he’s achieved in the sport. Finishing his career in Liverpool tonight with me is an honour.”
