Fighting

Following Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis’ knockout win over Frank Martin over the weekend, both fighters appeared at the post-fight press conference to talk about their thoughts on what transpired in the ring. Check out some excerpts of what both fighters had to say below.

Martin on the momentum quickly shifting in the fight after several rounds

“I just got to chillin’ too much on the ropes. Derrick, that’s one thing he’s been talking to me about in training camp for a while, not getting comfortable on the ropes, not chillin’ on them just ‘cause I feel like I can catch shots and this and that. I just feel like I was on the ropes too much, I just started chillin’ on the ropes too much, bouncing off them and stuff.”

Martin on how he rates Tank’s power

“I mean he got power but it’s more like he do a great job of landing his big shot. He know how to land that shot, hit guys on the button and get ‘em up out of there ‘cause he an accurate puncher and he just know how to land that shot.”

Tank on how he set Martin up for the KO

“I just had to get in the right range, I was finding my range. He had a decent jab, he was moving a lot. Just had to break him down as the fight was going on.”

On his interest in fighting Lomachenko

“For sure. As long as we go back to the drawing board, I’m willing to fight all of ‘em.”

On how he felt when Martin was winning early rounds

“He definitely was throwing more punches than I was beginning of the rounds. My whole thing was to let him tire himself out. I don’t think he was connecting a lot of them shots but he was definitely touching my gloves and stuff like that. But I knew he was going to tire himself out, that was the whole game plan.”
