Shakur Stevenson in talks for world title clash with Joe Cordina

Latest

SHAKUR STEVENSON is in talks to defend his world title against lightweight newcomer Joe Cordina.

The 27-year-old southpaw won the vacant title via a decision victory over Edwin De Los Santos in November and made a successful first defence against the 12-1 Artem Harutyunyan last month.

And now promoter Eddie Hearn has revealed that discussions are ongoing to match Stevenson with Cordina later this year.

The Welshman lost his IBF super-featherweight title when he was stopped inside eight rounds by underdog Anthony Cacace in Saudi Arabia in May and is now plotting a move up to 135lbs.

However there might not be any time to bed into his new division with a fight against arguably the best lightweight in the world now possible.

Hearn told Boxing News: “I’ve spoken to Joe about fighting Shakur Stevenson.

“Joe is up for it but he also understands the challenge. Ideally moving up a weight division, you’d ideally want an easier fight than Shakur Stevenson but Joe is at the age where he wants to be involved in the biggest fights in the sport and if he feels like the opportunity is right I’m sure he would take it.

“There are discussions ongoing.”
