Chris Eubank Jr is currently scheduled to return to the ring next month when he faces Kamil Szeremeta in Riyadh, and he talks to Sky Sports about his thoughts on the fight as well as being excited for what he believes will be his career-defining stretch over the next year. Check out some of what Eubank had to say below.
Eubank Jr on his expectations for facing Szeremeta
“He’s fought at the highest levels, he fought GGG, Jaime Munguia. He is a solid guy, tough, durable, you know, if I take my eye off the ball there can be an upset. This is the perfect type of opponent that will test me after being a year out. And as long as everything goes to plan October 12th, we’ve got some big, big fights coming up over the next 12 months after that.”
On what fights he’s looking to make should he win next month
“All those mega fights are in the pipeline. It’s so easy to make now, now that we have Sky Sports, now that we have the Saudi contingency. These domestic fights in Conor Benn, Billy Joe Saunders, they’re going to get made. The international with Canelo and Lara potentially for the world title, all these names are ready to go. So, put on a great performance October 12th and then take these guys out.”
On if the next 12 months could define his career
“After everything I’ve been through and all the things I’ve done over the last 10-12 years, this next year or two is probably going to be the biggest part of my career, the most important. And that’s very rare. Usually when guys get older things kind of whittle down. For me it’s ramping up, which is why I need to be active. Taking a year off, it wasn’t ideal but, you know, we’ve got through what we’ve got through and now we have the opportunity to be active and consistent over the next 12 months.”
On if he’s more interested in winning world titles or avenging losses or pursuing other prize fights.
“I’m not going to say one’s more important than the other because at the end of the day, boxing, nothing ever goes to plan. You can’t just say ‘I want to fight for a world title’ or ‘I want to fight in a huge fight’ — you’ve got to take what you can get. I’m just in a blessed position to have all these options. If a world title can be made in the next six months, absolutely.
“Lara just fought Danny Garcia a few days ago and I know I can beat him, I know I can take that title from him so 100% we’re going to be gunning for that fight at some point soon. But if we can’t get it, we’ve got other names ready and waiting to go.”
On if he favors Anthony Joshua to beat Daniel Dubois this weekend
“He is a favorite, you know, from what I can see just in terms of his ability, his experience, his attributes. I think he outguns Dubois in most areas. But the exciting thing about heavyweight boxing is that one punch can change it all, one punch can end it all.”
