“He’ll be looking for the biggest fights”: Hearn advises Joshua to wait on Usyk vs Fury outcome

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn tells Sky Sports that he still has designs on some big fights for his prized heavyweight, Anthony Joshua. Joshua, who Hearn admits is coming towards the end of his professional fighting career, isn’t really in a position for a rebuild and Hearn would like him to rest up until December 21 when Oleksandr Usyk rematches Tyson Fury.

“If Tyson Fury loses that fight, you set up a big fight with Anthony Joshua. If Tyson Fury wins that fight, you make a voluntary defence against Anthony Joshua for the unified heavyweight championship.”

Hearn continued by saying a potential Fury vs Joshua fight is still clearly the biggest fight to be made in the heavyweight division by a solid margin, and therefore believe that’s something worth targeting for 2025.

“Even in defeat, he’s still the biggest star in Britain with Tyson Fury, and possibly around the world. He doesn’t want to lose, but as we close the chapters to his career he’ll be looking for the biggest fights.”

While Joshua has been gracious in defeat, there are many who firmly believe that Joshua no longer has the durability to hold up against the cream of the crop, but it’s also been said that Joshua will not have the motivation to fight boxers a level below the very best. That puts him in a bit of a predicament at the moment, but his team believes there’s still big opportunities on the horizon.
