Golden Globes nod is latest nomination for boxer/actor Kali Reis

Kali Reis has gone from the Golden Gloves to the Golden Globes.

Reis, who won three world titles during her time in the boxing ring, is now accumulating acting nominations for her most recent role on the silver screen.

After being nominated for an Emmy earlier this year, it was announced Monday that Reis will be up for a Golden Globe award on January 5.

Reis, 19-7-1 (5 KOs) boxed from 2008-2021, winning the WBC middleweight title in 2016, the WBA junior welterweight title in 2020 and adding the WBO’s belt at 140lbs in 2021 in her final fight.

2021 is also when Reis debuted in “Catch the Fair One,” a Josef Kubota Wladyka film that follows Kaylee, a Native American boxer in search of her missing sister, and explores several contemporary issues facing Indigenous people. Reis, an advocate for the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women movement, was recruited to star and co-write. After opening to positive reviews at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival, “Catch the Fair One” earned Reis the Jury Award for Best Actress at the Newport Beach Film Festival.

And it helped lead to a major role co-starring alongside Jodie Foster in “True Detective: Night Country,” the latest season in HBO/Max’s series.

Reis played the role of state trooper Evangeline Navarro, who works in the fictional Alaskan town of Ennis and struggles with her past, including parts of her Indigenous heritage and culture. It’s a dynamic role that required equal parts grit and vulnerability, and critics widely agree that Reis holds her own on screen with Foster, a two-time Academy Award and three-time Golden Globe winner.

Reis earned an Emmy nomination for “outstanding supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie” for her work on “True Detective.”

The 2024 Emmy winner in that category wound up being Jessica Gunning for her role on the mini-series “Baby Reindeer,” but Reis was honored to be listed alongside talented actors in Gunning, Lily Gladstone (“Under the Bridge”), Nava Mau (“Baby Reindeer”), Dakota Fanning (“Ripley”), Aja Naomi King (“Lessons in Chemistry”) and Diane Lane (“Feud”).

For the Golden Globes, Reis is competing in the category of “best performance by a female actor in a supporting role on television.” The other nominees are Liza Colon-Zayas (“The Bear”), Hannah Einbinder (“Hacks”), Fanning, Gunning and Allison Janney (“The Diplomat”).

According to the Internet Movie Database, Reis is also up for a Critics Choice award for “best supporting actress in a limited series or movie made for television.” That ceremony will be held on January 12, one week after the Golden Globes.
