Former world champion Amir Khan has warned Terence Crawford to avoid making the same mistake that he once made.
Back in 2016, Khan jumped up in weight to face Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez at a catchweight of 155-pounds. At the time, Khan was competing as a welterweight and Canelo was heading up to middleweight.
The end came in the sixth round, when Canelo knocked Khan out cold with a single shot to the chin.
At the moment, there is talk of Terence Crawford – the undisputed welterweight champion – making the big jump to super middleweight to challenge Canelo for his undisputed crown.
Khan is very familiar with Crawford. He suffered a stoppage loss to him in 2019. And then in the final fight of his career against Kell Brook in 2022, Khan worked side by side with Crawford and veteran trainer Brian ‘Bomac’ McIntyre.
The Bolton star believes Crawford should avoid the scenario of going up to fight Canelo.
“There were rumors that I was hearing that Crawford may go up to fight Canelo as well. I’m like….. I like both guys and I think Crawford should not really give that much weight away. It’s too much. I’ve tried it myself, I’ve done it myself at the peak of my career. I had a great win against [Chris Algieri] and then went and fought Canelo,” Khan explained to Seconds Out.
Canelo is scheduled to return on September 30th at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, in a world title defense against undisputed junior middleweight champion Jermell Charlo.
Khan is giving Charlo little to no chance of success.
“No [I don’t think Charlo wins], Canelo is something else. Canelo is a beast. He’s got the power, he’s got the speed. Canelo, in my opinion, is a lot quicker when he throws his combinations. Canelo is a very good fighter. I don’t think anyone is beating Canelo [at 168],” Khan said.
