Barrera to meet Ponce De Leon in Nov. 20 exhibition bout

Fighting

Hall of Famer Marco Antonio Barrera and former world champion Daniel Ponce De Leon will square off in a six-round exhibition bout on Saturday, November 20, with the event available on FITE TV for $9.99.

It probably goes without saying that this isn’t going to be anyone’s focus on that evening, which also features the ESPN+ pay-per-view fight between Terence Crawford and Shawn Porter.

The 47-year-old Barrera, who last had a legitimate fight in 2011 and retired with a record of 67-7 (44 KO), won world titles at junior featherweight, featherweight (where he was Ring Magazine and LINEAL!! champion), and junior lightweight in his career, which began in 1989.

Barrera was noted, of course, for his legendary and extremely personal rivalry with Erik Morales, plus his 2001 win over Prince Naseem Hamed, and battles with the likes of Manny Pacquiao, Juan Manuel Marquez, Junior Jones (which saw him briefly retire in 1997 after two losses), Kennedy McKinney, and many more.

Ponce De Leon, 41, was a reliable contender and two-division champion in his career, which spanned 2001-14. He held a junior featherweight title from 2005-08, and a featherweight title from 2012-13.

Barrera did a six-round exhibition against Jesus Soto Karass in June. Golden Boy, who promoted both Barrera and Ponce De Leon for portions of their careers, will be working with Tapia Promotions to promote the event.

The show will also feature sanctioned boxing matches on the undercard, including Abel Mendoza (30-0, 23 KO) facing Victor Zaleta (20-5-1, 10 KO) in a 10-round lightweight bout.
