‘Be careful what you wish for’: Jonas takes comfort in underdog role against Price

During today’s press conference for the March 7 women’s welterweight title unification between Natasha Jonas and Lauren Price, the older Jonas says Price shouldn’t take her too lightly just because she’s 40 years old, and that the pressure is actually on Price to perform under the bright lights.

“I decide when it’s time [to retire], be careful what you wish for,” Jonas told a news conference Tuesday. “The pressure is not on me. Lauren’s the champion whose never lost a round, the Olympic gold medalist. There’s a lot of pressure on her to come and do what she says she can do.”

To that end Jonas feels comfortable being in the underdog role despite being the one coming into the fight with two world titles. Price, for her part, feels extremely confident that she’ll be able to do the business against Jonas even though she only has eight professional fights under belt and expects to beat Jonas in style.

“I know I’m better in all areas, I back myself,” Price said. “My accolades speak for themselves. I know I’m fresh in the pro game … But each fight I’ve stepped up.”

Price’s confidence is further boosted by her clear win over former champion Jessica McCaskill, and doesn’t appear to think this fight will be that much more difficult than that one. If Price is right about her inclination, she’ll have two more belts to add to her collection this spring.
