IBF champion William Scull and undefeated contender Christian Mbilli emerged as likely candidates, but Julius Julianis reports that Alvarez has instead struck a deal with Jake Paul.
Paul (11-1, 7 KO) is, of course, coming off an insanely lucrative sideshow against the ancient Mike Tyson in November, which followed a thorough drubbing of MMA veteran turned bare-knuckle standout Mike Perry in July. Yes, this means that unified super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez will once again go an entire year without facing a super middleweight contender.
