Dmitry Bivol unenthused over possible big fight rematch

DMITRY BIVOL says if Canelo Alvarez wants a rematch against him, he needs to talk to Eddie Hearn and not the media.

The WBA light-heavyweight champion is in London (today) for a press conference to build up his October 12 undisputed clash against WBC, IBF and WBO titlist Artur Beterbiev.

Over two years ago, Bivol defended his belt in Las Vegas against Canelo when the Mexican moved from super-middleweight—where he became undisputed—to challenge the Russian. Bivol, however, proved to be the superior boxer on the night, beating Canelo on points. The 34-year-old has made no secret of the fact that he would like a second opportunity to face Bivol and avenge his loss.

Earlier today (September 25) Boxing News caught up with Bivol before the presser to ask for his thoughts on another fight against one of the biggest names in boxing.

“I just don’t think about it at all,” he said. “I have my training camp, I have Beterbiev fight and then we will see. Just talks, talks. If we need to do some fight he doesn’t need to talk with the media, he needs to talk to [promoter] Eddie Hearn.”

Canelo is still a three-belt world champion at super-middleweight and 11 days ago retained his belts after outclassing Edgar Berlanga.

“It was good fight,” Bivol said. “I didn’t see it [in] full to be honest because I was in my camp but I saw couple of rounds. He was good. Berlanga was bigger and his boxing kills is better of course than Berlanga.”

Prior to the Berlanga fight, questions were raised over Canelo’s future and whether or not he was in decline after such a long career. BN put that theory to Bivol.

“I don’t know. I have my own way, he has his own way. We could fight [when] I was available. More than one year we were waiting [for] offer but we didn’t get it. Doesn’t matter.”
