‘Give that man Canelo’: Pros react to Benavidez’s win over Andrade

Fighting

David Benavidez impressed again tonight, smashing Demetrius Andrade in six rounds and potentially setting himself up for a big showdown with Canelo Alvarez next May.

Benavidez (28-0, 24 KO) has already called out Canelo directly, saying he feels he’s the “real champ” at 168 lbs, where Canelo is the undisputed, four-belt champion.

It’s clear that he isn’t the only one who wants to see that fight next, and it’s not just the fans, either.

Fellow pro fighters are calling for Canelo vs Benavidez to come next, including former titleholder Jamel Herring.

“Please give that man a Canelo showdown, and don’t tell me he doesn’t ‘deserve’ one,” Herring said. “We’ve seen lesser challengers, Cinnamon.”

Danny “Swift” Garcia and Shakur Stevenson kept it brief and serious.

“Benavidez is a problem,” Garcia wrote.

“Dude is a killer for sure,” Stevenson said.

Canelo vs Benavidez has to be considered the front-runner for Canelo’s next fight. The Mexican superstar has two fights left on his Premier Boxing Champions deal, and Benavidez is clearly the biggest option at 168 lbs, and he’s in-house at PBC.
