‘It is a natural WBC elimination tournament’: Sulaiman discusses Dec. 23 card in Saudi Arabia

As we gear up for next month’s huge heavyweight card on December 23 with Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder fighting in separate bouts, WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman tells Sky Sports that the card is almost like a de facto tournament for the sanctioning body and will be sure to shake up their standings.

“In itself it is a natural WBC elimination tournament. You have Wilder, No 1, Joshua, you have Parker, you have Otto Wallin, all those are highly ranked in the WBC. After December 23 we’re going to see a different picture in the rankings,” Sulaiman explained.

Sulaiman would then continue on by saying with Joshua and Wilder being favored to win their respective fights, a potential conclusion would be for those two to finally meet in the ring for what his organization would likely consider a final eliminator.

“It looks like Wilder and Joshua are on a collision course. That could very well be a final elimination to determine a mandatory contender for the WBC title,” Sulaiman said.

The WBC heavyweight title is currently held by Tyson Fury, who is intending to stage an undisputed title unification with Oleksandr Usyk in the coming year, with another marquee fight to follow should things not go awry.
