The Daily Mail (apologies) revealed this morning that unified super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo was arrested this past Saturday for “allegedly assaulting a family member.” ESPN confirmed the news this evening, adding that Charlo was charged with “misdemeanor assault causing bodily injury to a family member.”
The victim was not named, though ESPN added that Chyane Westbrook, Charlo’s (35-2-1, 19 KO) wife, “filed for a temporary restraining order along with a divorce” yesterday. As the article points out, Charlo was charged with but subsequently acquitted of choking his then-girlfriend in 2018.
Details of the incident have not been released. Though there is audio floating around Twitter that’s alleged to be of Charlo admitting to some heinous deeds, I’ve yet to find a credible source and thus will not be sharing it.
Charlo fought just once this year, suffering a one-sided defeat to Canelo Alvarez in September. He was subsequently stripped of his WBO title for not facing Tim Tszyu, then vacated his IBF title rather than fight longtime mandatory challenger Bakhram Murtazaliev. He still holds the WBC and WBA belts.
