Joseph Adorno just wasn’t meant to fight in Las Vegas.
The unbeaten lightweight prospect will no longer appear on Friday’s ESPN+ show from Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, Top Rank officials confirmed to BoxingScene.com. Adorno was pulled from the show sometime after missing weight by more than two pounds for a planned eight-round bout with Argentina’s Elias Damian Araujo.
Adorno (14-0-2, 12KOs) registered at 139.2-pounds during Thursday’s official pre-fight weigh-in for a bout contracted at 137-pounds. Araujo (21-3, 8KOs) weighed 136 pounds, well within the limit but now left without an opponent for his troubles.
The incident marks the second straight time that Adorno was removed from a boxing event in Las Vegas after a scale fail. The 22-year-old Boricua from Allentown, Pennsylvania was one pound over the limit for a planned bout with Dallas’ Alexis del Bosque last June 23 at MGM Grand Conference Center. His weakened state didn’t provide room to attempt to shed the extra weight, with event handlers instead calling for a same-day weigh-in at a maximum of 142 pounds. Adorno was a no-show for the session and was ultimately removed from the ESPN-televised card.
The dilemma left Adorno out of the ring for more than 15 months before returning this past April, fighting unbeaten Jamaine Ortiz to an eight-round draw in their hellacious slugfest at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida. Adorno was spared his first career defeat on the strength of two knockdowns, pulling him even on two of the three scorecards and ahead 76-74 on the dissenting card.
The balance of Friday’s card will move forward as planned. Headlining the show is a junior lightweight title unification clash between WBO titlist Mikaela Mayer (15-0, 5KOs) and long-reigning IBF titlist Maiva Hamadouche (22-1, 18KOs).
