Former unified super featherweight world champion Mikaela Mayer is eager to test herself at the lightweight limit, against the undisputed champion in the weight class, Katie Taylor.
Mayer is going to compete in the lightweight division for her next fight.
She wants to bounce back from her October decision loss to Alycia Baumgardner, who in victory unified the IBF, IBO, WBC and WBO super featherweight titles.
There was no rematch clause, with Baumgardner moving forward to other opportunities in the weight class.
Mayer is looking to capture some gold in a new weight class. With her physical dimensions, Mayer believes that she can fight all the way up to junior welterweight or welterweight.
“I’m going up to 135 for this next fight, I’m going to start making a name for myself in that division,” said Mayer to Sky Sports.
“Katie Taylor has always been on my list. I have a lot of respect for her, she has accomplished a lot in this sport and I want to challenge myself against her. I definitely hope to get that fight made some time in 2023, and I’m not going to stop there. I feel like I have the size and skill to go up to 140 and 147.
“That’s what’s great about the women of this era, we’re willing to challenge ourselves in multiple weight divisions. We go where the big fights are. It would be great [to fight Taylor]. We both have proven ourselves. She’s obviously been proven for many years but I think I had a great year. I feel like I have a very strong fanbase and I think people want to see that fight. Hopefully, we can get it done.”
