‘They made a mistake’: Benavidez Sr says Morrell took this fight too soon

Fighting

David Benavidez’s father/trainer, Jose Benavidez Sr, spent some time talking to Fight Hub TV about his son’s upcoming meeting with David Morrell. Benavidez Sr gives respect to Morrell but admits that he believes Morrell and his team could’ve used more seasoning before going into a fight like this, and that might cause him to take a career-altering beating against his son. Here’s some of what Benavidez Sr said about the fight below.

“I believe David Morrell is a great fighter, he had a really good pedigree in amateurs, he’s a two-time world champion, young, strong — a lot of people don’t want to fight him,” Benavidez Sr said. “But there’s levels to this sh-t. Boxing, (Benavidez),I believe he’s in another level, I think (he) is going to stop him in maybe the ninth, tenth round.

“(Benavidez) is training super hard, right now is super motivated mentally, physically…I see (Benavidez) hitting hard, he’s just out of this world right now.

“First of all (Morrell’s) nervous, he’s never been in a stage like this. He doesn’t have the experience. Yeah, he does have a lot of knockouts, he has 12 fights or 11 fights but you’re supposed all your first fighters. The last one he didn’t look that good.

“(His whole team), they’re all nervous ‘cause I think they made a mistake to put him (in this fight) too early. I would’ve liked to see him fight Caleb Plant, ‘Boo Boo’ Andrade, maybe a McCumby, something like that to see where he’s at.

“But right away he wants to step in with a monster, The Mexican Monster? In my mind I think they made a mistake. Probably (Benavidez) will hurt him so much that he’ll probably retire him and not be the same because if you look back, every fighter that (Benavidez) has fought where are they at now?”
