Why Frank Warren will NOT push for Tyson Fury vs Daniel Dubois

Latest

FRANK WARREN has admitted he would struggle if his two heavyweight stars Tyson Fury and Daniel Dubois collide in an ‘awkward situation’ next year.

Dubois firmly cemented his position as one of the world’s leading heavyweights by crushing Anthony Joshua inside five brutal rounds at Wembley Stadium.

The manner of the defeat means the long-awaited all-British showdown between Joshua and Fury now looks further away than ever, with the Gypsy King preparing for his December 21 rematch with Oleksandr Usyk.

What looks more likely now is a fight between Queensberry Promotions pair Fury and Dubois, particularly if the former wins the belts back from Usyk four days before Christmas.

Dubois holds the IBF heavyweight title so a fight with the winner of the December 21 encounter would therefore represent another undisputed fight at heavyweight.

But Warren, who signed Dubois straight from the amateurs and has promoted Fury for the best part of the last decade, says that would be a difficult night for him.

“I am going to tell you straight, I would be in a very, very awkward situation to do that,” said Warren of matching Dubois and Fury.

“I’m not going to lie about that. I would struggle with that. If they wanted it and the business called for then that’s up to them. It’s not something I would push for. If there is an offer made that makes a lot of sense and they want to do it then that is up to them. We will see what happens. It’s not going to be my decision. It is up to the fighters.

“We will see what happens in December but there are loads of options. The heavyweight division is so loaded. We are blessed in the UK. I think we have the best heavyweights in the UK. We have Tyson, Daniel, got young Moses [Itauma] coming through and other guys. There are great fights there to be made.

“Daniel will go where the money is. There are some big fights there for him.”

It is fewer than four years since Dubois was stopped by Joe Joyce in the 10th round of their clash and subsequently labelled a quitter by certain sections of the boxing world.

Now Warren, who never lost faith in him, says the 27-year-old is the ‘hottest property in boxing’ after downing golden boy Joshua.

The Hall of Fame promoter said: “You never see him in a boring fight. Every fight he has is an exciting fight, he’s an exciting heavyweight. He showed everything that I thought was there for him and he went into the Lion’s Den. He went in against the nation’s favourite, I get that quite rightly so.

“They may have booed him going in but I said everyone would cheer him out. He’s the hottest property now in boxing.

“They were all making plans for Tyson against AJ and I told them it wouldn’t happen. I told them straight. They thought Baby Miller was going to beat him, I told them he would beat him. They said the same with Hrgovic, I said he would knock Hrgovic out. Styles make fights. I’m not stupid.

“I’ve been doing this a long time. We get our timings right.”
