‘You never think it’s going to be you’: Clarke reacts to first round knockout loss against Wardley

Fighting

Fabio Wardley and Frazer Clarke were expected to be set up for a second grueling fight of back-and-forth heavyweight action after what we witnessed the first time around, but what came to pass was a dominant performance from Wardley who swiftly knocked Clarke out in first round. Clarke is now tasked with going back to the drawing board and rebuilding, but says he’s not going to call it quits yet.

“I’m a fighter. I was naïve up until that moment, I never thought that could happen to me. Even though it’s happened to so many champions over the years, you never think it’s going to be you,” Clarke told Sky Sports News.

Clarke continues by saying that he’s been able to overcome injuries and other setbacks in the past, and this will be no different for him as he vows to return to better form. That said, Clarke is still human and knows the way things played out will weigh on him in one form or another for some time.

“It’s hard to take, it really is. On a personal note my pride’s hurt but physically I’m fine and mentally I’m up for the challenge once again. I’ve got a few more people to prove wrong now.”

Clarke credits Wardley for his performance, and says he thinks what happened was a combination of a great performance from Wardley with a slow start from himself, which obviously proved costly. Ultimately, however, Clarke knows he’ll eventually get over the disappointment as he looks towards better nights ahead.
